Man-Made Surf Facility Under Construction in Palm Desert

When you think of Palm Desert, what comes to mind? Golfing? Cochella? How about surfing? Indeed, a man-made surf lagoon is under construction and slated to open in Palm Desert in spring 2026. The facility will be one of the largest in North America, offering over five acres of surf terrain - aka, a big ass pool.

Mount Baldy Ski Resort Spared (So Far) By Vista Fire

A forest fire raging through the San Bernardino Mountains appears to have spared Mount Baldy Ski Resort. The Vista fire has burned thousands of acres of to date and remains uncontained, but on its Instagram feed, the resort expressed optimism:

“Well we are not 100% in the clear just yet, but it appears that the greater Mt Baldy area has dodged a bullet,” they wrote. “We have reason to believe we will be able to operate this weekend for scenic rides to the Top of the Notch.”

Home Fire Insurance Costs Skyrocket in SoCal Outdoors Destinations

Do you dream about owning a cabin in the SoCal mountains? We do. But the soaring costs of fire insurance sound more like a nightmare. Many insurance companies are dropping home insurance coverage or are drastically raising the costs for people who own homes in high-risk areas like Big Bear. Why can’t we have anything nice?

It’s not all grim news in Big Bear. The Grizzly 100 & Big Bear Mountain Biking Gran Fondo, a major annual MTB event, is slated for October 5 this year.

Body of Long-Lost San Bernardino Climber Recovered in Peru

Twenty-two years ago, Bill Stampfl, a mountaineer from Chino, California, was buried in an avalanche as he ascended Huascaran, a 22,000 peak in Peru, the tallest in the country. In June, his body was discovered on the mountain and returned to his family.

Cycling Sufferfests Start in Oceanside

Two of America’s most epic sufferfests, the Race Across America and Race Across the West, kicked off from Oceanside in June. The former ends in New Jersey, and the latter in Durango, Colorado. The Borrego Sun talked with some of the nutjobs - I mean, riders - doing the Race Across the West.

Fuel Keg Refills Small Propane Tanks for Camping

Ever feel guilty about using those non-refillable 1-pound propane tanks as fuel for your camp stoves or lanterns? I do. Either you throw your empties away, which seems like a huge waste, or you lug them around until you find a place to recycle them, which is a pain. Mr. Heater Buddy has a solution: the Fuel Keg, which lets you refill and reuse these midsized propane tanks.
