Mountain High survives massive wildfire
Last night, the massive Bridge Fire burned through Mountain High as it consumed a huge area in Angeles National Forest. Miraculously, the fire didn’t cause major damage to the resort - though fires burning across Southern California right now have burned buildings and caused injuries.
Death Valley records hottest summer…ever
Visitors at the Death Valley Furnace Creek thermometer questioning their live choices.
I went sailing on Saturday morning, thinking we could beat the heat. No wind and hot as…Death Valley? Yeah, right. Death Valley officially recorded its hottest summer in recorded history. The average 24-hour temperature for June and August was 104.5° F — as in, let’s get the F out of here.
POV from Snow Summits main MTB jump line
It’s closed due to the fires at the moment, but Snow Summit arguably has the best mountain bike park in Southern California and the bonus of a lift to bring you back up the hill. This POV video from MTB Alan’s YouTube channel of a high-speed run down the main jump line is worth a watch. Wish I could ride like that…
Oceanside’s Caity Simmers is the youngest female World Surf Champion…ever
Caity Simmers of Oceanside won the World Surf League Finals held last week at Lower Trestles in San Onofre State Beach. At 18 years old, she is the youngest woman to win the world championship, besting San Clemente’s Caroline Marks, who took the gold medal at the Olympics earlier this summer.
This profile of Simmers from The Inertia will get you up to speed on our local bad ass:
Glendora to build a bike park in South Hills Wilderness
The city of Glendora in Los Angeles County is building a bike park in the town’s South Hills area. The park will feature three jump lines for advanced, intermediate, and beginning riders, two pump tracks (intermediate and beginner), and a climbing trail.
Snoop Dog chizziling outdoors
One of the best things about the recent Summer Olympics was Snoop Dog doing his thing around Paris. Now that he’s conquered the world of global sports, he’s headed for the outdoors market. It’s a clever ad — but a $700 fire pit isn’t what I’m hauling into the backcountry. That takes rap god money.
Black Outside documents PCT trek by first-time camper
What are the odds of a person who’s never spent a night outside in his life thru-hiking the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail? That’s the subject of Black Outside, which follows Gary Wilkerson as he challenges himself to conquer the PCT. Trailer above.
Speaking of unlikely adventures, Everett Kalin, a 93-year-old man from Oakland, in July became possibly the oldest person to summit Yosemite’s Half Dome.
Is Baja getting too dangerous to visit?
It’s a perennial question for Southern California residents who love exploring the Baja Peninsula. While many foreign tourists still visit Baja, recent violent attacks give pause as to whether it’s worth the risk. Ron Gomez Hoff, the publisher of the Talk Baja Facebook page and website, recently recounted a horrific attack suffered by him and his wife and called for Mexico to do more to address crime.

Hyundai Santa Cruz is the reincarnation of the Subaru Brat
I’m not getting rid of my Jeep anytime soon, but I have to admit that the Hyundai Santa Cruz intrigues me — just as the old Subaru Brats always caught my attention. Is it a truck? Is it a car? Its both! I can see the utility of the Santa Cruz if you just need something to haul dirt or mountain bikes around in, but want the advanatges of a more compact vehicle. The folks at Gear Junkie reviewed the 2025 model, in case you are looking for more info on the car from a outdoors enthusiasts perspective.

Los Angeles Climbing Gym Guide
Trying to round up all the climbing gyms in Los Angeles is a fool’s errand, but I gave it a shot. This guide includes 17 rock gyms in and near LA proper (but not the Inland Empire). I’m sure I missed some. If you know of any others, drop me a line. Also, if you are looking for gyms in San Diego, we’ve got you covered.
